On this occasion, the Department of Molecular Sciences, supported by the local branch of the Romanian Academy and Institute of Biological Research Cluj-Napoca, organized a commemorative scientific session “Academician Victor Preda centenary” which was attended by leading figures of the Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca, colleagues, associates and friends of the esteemed academician. Victor Preda (1912-1982), studied medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj-Napoca (1929-1935). He became Assistant professor at the Anatomy Department in 1933, then lecturer and in 1955 he was elected Professor and Head of the Biology Department. In 1958 he obtained his PhD in Medical Sciences. The extensive scientific work of Professor Victor Preda, includes a number of over 300 different scientific papers. He is the author of a valuable course for medical students (1968), and of the 1972 book volume of “Medical genetics”. Author of 10 monographs, he was awarded the Romanian Academy Prize in 1976 for “Regeneration of tissues and organs in vertebrates “, written in collaboration with Professor Octaviana Crăciun, his collaborator for 40 years. Among the academic positions held by Victor Preda we mention: Dean of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca (1950-1952), Scientific vice-rector (1958-1963), vice-president of the Scientific Medical Societies Union (1963-1964), secretary of the Romanian Academy (1963-1964), chairman of the Cluj Nature Protection Commission of the Romanian Academy (1975-death), Correspondent member of the Romanian academy (1963) and member of the Romanian Academy (1974).

Centennial of Pyloromyotomy
Shelf-life of scientific discoveries is usually less than few decades because science itself is an ever evolving discipline. Therefore, it is truly remarkable that pyloromyotomy described by Conrad Ramstedt (Fig. 1) is celebrating centennial this year. In October 1912, Ramstedt described the cure of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) and that serendipitous discovery has stood the test of 100 y...
متن کاملElliptic Gauss sums and applications to point counting
We shall first briefly review some general facts on elliptic curves over finite fields, and the algorithms of Schoof and Schoof Elkies Atkin (SEA) for counting points. We refer to text books as Cox, Silverman or Washington [Cox, Si, Wa] for the general topics and to the original papers of Schoof [Sch, Sch1] for a presentation of the algorithms. Let p be an odd prime. Consider the elliptic curve:

The discovery of X-ray diffraction is reviewed from the perspective of the contemporary knowledge in 1912 about the nature of X-rays. Laue’s inspiration that led to the experiments by Friedrich and Knipping in Sommerfeld’s institute was based on erroneous expectations. The ensuing discoveries of the Braggs clarified the phenomenon (although they, too, emerged from dubious assumptions about the ...
متن کاملA Journey through Researches on Cosmic Rays
Cosmic ray causes hazards to microelectronic circuits. Presence of charged particles in the atmosphere was first noticed by Coloumb in 1785. But cosmic ray was discovered by Victor Hess in 1912. However new era of particle physics was started with the invention of neutron monitor in 1948 by John A. Simpson. New information regarding the energy spectrum, anisotropy, latitudinal, longitudinal and...
